Why the cutoff matters

A player's age today may differ from the age used to place them in a football competition. Always check the competition's own rules.

Calculation

Formula

Suggested group = the player's age on the competition cutoff date, placed in the next “Under” age group.

For example, a player aged 10 on 31 August is normally shown as Under 11.

Example

Worked example

A player born on 18 April 2015 is 11 on 31 August 2026.

The suggested group for the 2026/27 season is therefore Under 12.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

What date decides a youth football age group in England?

The FA Standard Code of Rules for youth competitions uses a player's age on 31 August of the relevant playing season for its standard age-group table.

Does the calculator prove a player is eligible?

No. It provides a planning result. The league or competition makes the final registration decision.

Why is the age group one number above the player's age?

Under 12 generally means the player is under 12 at the specified cutoff, so a player aged 11 at that point falls into the Under 12 group.
